Ethiopian Ministry of Trade (MoT) has decided to improve solar import regulation

Ethiopian Ministry of Trade (MoT) has decided to improve solar import regulation.

According to the improved import regulation, solar importers is no longer required to:

  1. provide six Solar product samples to Ethiopian Conformity Assessment Enterprise (ECAE) from each type per shipment,
  2. Pay a laboratory testing fee of birr 19,000 for each type sample per shipment,
  3. Deposit 0.5% of invoice amounts (as quality guarantee) to ECAE.

Therefore, all solar products entering to the Ethiopian market should comply with the National quality standard.  Hence, products need to be Lighting Global or International Electronic commission (IEC) quality verified.  The shipment then need to be confirmed by third party conformity body including SGS, BV (Bureau Veritas) and Intertek.

The improved procedure is effective on September 28,2018, and it is  believed to encourage the supply of quality verified solar products, and  censor the inflow of low quality solar products to the country.
